Carbon Sequestration

Carbon emissions is responsible for more than half the radiative force associated with global warming. This will not change meaningfully because there is no way we can sequester enough carbon emissions from the atmosphere to off-set the annual, on going emissions rate. Trees and ecosystems play an extremely important role in mitigating climate change and global warming, because they sequester carbon emissions via photosynthesis and store the carbon in the biomass and soil. Our objectives are focused on forestry to offset carbon emissions due to high efficacy rates and cost-effectiveness.

In the Philippines, there are around 2 M ha of grassland / denuded areas on Ancestral Domains caused by forest degradation which typically starts with logging, forest based agriculture  and continuous cultivation. The main approach of the government to rehabilitate these areas is through reforestation. However the success of state reforestation efforts is mediocre due to the lack of incentives to keep the trees alive once the project contract period is over – usually 3 – 5 years. In contrast the CPRSX REDD+ projects are 30 year projects developed to sequester emissions and produce carbon permits for long term revenue opportunities. Our JV partners are therefore incentivised for the long term through continued employment, education and skills development and family well being.

Our REDD+ reforestation plans for redundant farm lands made available for reforestation through our Protected Food Production Program will be carried out by planting a combination of fast-growing and indigenous species. On the redundant farmlands and grassland areas, fast growing species will be planted to provide shade and enhance the microclimate in readiness for the planting of the indigenous species Gmelina arborea, teak (Tectona grandis), pine (Pinus kesiya), narra, and dipterocarp species and rubber trees.

Our JV Partners recognise that their small-scale farms experience consistent crop losses and therefore, loss of income. They welcome the opportunity to overcome the consequential losses and are excited to embrace climate change adaptation and subsequent opportunities which will offer sustainable livelihoods and enhanced community well being. They know that their farms are unsustainable and therefore they welcome the CPRSX partnerships which will transform their farm lands into valuable and sustainable REDD+ and emissions trading enterprises.
